Hunger Aid

For some years now, climatic global warming drastically founds its way into Tansania, too. In Ifakara the major crops are rice and Indian corn. This year again there is a great draught and bareness in the region, resulting in significant crop failure. For the great majority agriculture for home use in the main source of income. The harvest provides the bigger part of nutrition and, by selling part of it, is the only source of income.

By the end of the year the consequences of those crop failures will hit many, when all resources will be spent, including seeds which would have been necessary for the new harvest.Three years ago, our association decided to found a financial hunger-aid of Euro 5000,- to be readily available on demand and to be replenished. Last year we were able to support 584 famine-stricken people.

In cooperation with the parish of Ifakara we decided for 2009 to buy now, when in the neighbourhood of harvest prices are relatively low, for Euro 3000,- Indian corn and to store in in Nazarethi Leper station also run by Fr. Salutaris. Prices for Indian corn will rise continuously towards the end of the year and will explode, when the great need will hit the people. But then we should be able to help the needy with our resources bought at a favourable price.

Fr. Salutaris keeps a list of those families, of the elderly and the sick supported, and renders account as he did in the past.
